Mr. Brocklehurst reumed. "This i learnt from her benefactress; from the pious and charitable lady who adopted her in her orphan state.....and, teachers, superitendent, I beg of you not to allow the wanters to stagnate around her." Page 69.
- holy snap. i would not be able to sit there and take that from him. to pretty much be called comletely evil and horrible right to my face like that and not even be given the chanceto stick up for myself. he is such a jerk. does he even realize what that kind of stuff can do to a person and the way they think of themselves? but on the up side it seems that she has taken a chapter from Helens book and just took it hte way she was supposed to.

"Julias hair curls naturally" returned Miss Temple, still more quietly. "Natuarally!Yes but we are not to conform to nature: i wish these girls to bethe children of Grace: and why that abundance? I have agian and again intimated that i desire the hair to be arranged closely and modestly....Tell all the first form to rise up and direct their faces to the wall." Page 66.
-what the heck. he wants them ato cut their hair! i would not let that crazy old man touch any of my hair. he is suck a tight ***. why does everything have to be that way? what matters is that they learn and that they are provided for, not that they look perfect and half alive. its not like they go to the most privileged and upper class school in the city. they are orphans. i would want to just be left alone to go to school with out haveing some old guy telling me what my hair can and cant do.

" Madam, allow me an instant.-You are aware that my plan in bringing these girls up is, not to accustomm them to habits of luxury and indulgence, but ot render them hardy, patient, self denying. Should any little accidental dissappiontment of the appitite occur, such as, the spoiling of a meal, the under or over dressing of a meal, the incident is ought not to be neutralised by replacing with something more delicate....into these childrens mouths you may indeed feed their vile bodies but you think little of how you starve their immortal souls." Page 66
-he is such a stiff. why does it matter that instead of starving these kids she fed them. if they are hungry they arent going to get anything out of the day if all they can think about is the fact that htey are hungry. he thinks that starving them is going to strengthen their spirits? when you fast your supposed to do it when you have a personal reason to do it. not because your school owner is a total stiff.

" a frequent interlude of these performances was the enactment of the part of Eutychusby some half a donzen of little girls;who over powered with sleep, would fall down, if not out of the third loft, yet off the fourth form, and be taken up half dead. the remedy was to thrust them formard into the centre of the scholl-room and oblige them to stand there until the sermon was finished." Page 63.
-it sounds like it isnt a very pleasant experience to go to church, especailly if your one of the little ones. i would be so pissed if they made me stay up untill i was so tired that i was falling down. i mean wat the hell? what do they think that they are teaching them that way? they clearly arent going to learn anything that way cuase theyre to busy sleeping lol.

"Sundays were dreary days in that wintery season. we had to walk two miles to Brocklebridge church where are patron officiated. we set out cold we arrived at church colder: during the morning service we became almost paralyzed. it was too far to return to dinner, and an allowance of cold meat and bread, in the same penuriuos proportion observed in our ordinary meals, was served round between services." Page 62
-It sounds like there is alot of cold stuff. i wouldnt think it healthy for all these kids to be out and exposed to that much cold with out any heating or opportunities to warm up. the walking makes sense cuz it was the only way to get around. but as far as the cold food and services, i dont see why it needs to be that way. cant they heat up the food or at least put them near a fire or somehting. it seems like instead of looking forward to church they dread it. you dont get anything out of church if you dread going...

-Helen believes in the good in everyone i think. she seems to enjoy saying that she can be the bigger person. she takes her punishment, she says to turn the other cheek, she does her best to walk in the light of christ. she wants to better herself and "fix" her faults. she wants to be the best she can be. its niceto read about someone who is like that.

" and the teacher instantly and sharply inflicted on her neck a dozen strokes with the bunch of twigs. Not a tear rose from Burns' eye; and while i paused from my sowing, becuase my fingers quivered at this spectical with sentiment of unavialing and impotent anger, not a feature of her pensive face altered its ordinary expression." "Hardened girl!" explaimed Miss Scatcherd. Page 56.
- Helen is a person who can take it so that the rest of the girls can learn from her example. she takes the pain of her punishment with out a tear or a flinch and all that. she simply takes it because she knows that in the end it is ment to better her and her teachers punished her harshly because they thought the best of her and thought that she culd be great. knowing this helps her be able to take the punishment that gets doled out her direction.

"how can she bear it so firmly? I aked myself. Were i in her place it seems to me i should wish the erth to open and swallowme up. she looks as if she were thinking of something : of something not beyond her punishment- beyond her situation." Page 54.
- this is about Janes first friend. she gets in trouble in class and is put on a stool before the whole class. this punishment is supposed to be humiliating and all that but Helen just sits there calm as stone and takes it. Jane has a hard time dealing with this because she was finally allowed to le her temper go on Reed and now she must learn to curb her temper and allow these punishments.

- this is nice. she is finally surrounded by people who will understand what she thinks and feels. you can see that Reed didnt choose the best most privileged school for Jane to go to. she seems to make the most of it tho.

a quarter of an hour passed beore lessons again began, during which the school-room was in a glorious tumult; for that space of time it seemed to ne permitted to talk loud and more freely.....
I heard the name of Mr. Brocklehurst pronounced by some lips; at which Miss. Miller shook her head disapprovingly; but she made no great effort to check the general wrath, doubtless she shared in it." Page 48.
- it sounds like they have the day structured well at the school. the name Brocklehurst doesnt seem to be very popular either. no doubt most of the girls there share in a similar experience with him in there previouse place of residence. i think that he is probably the head master or the head guy at the school. im also sure that that possition wasnt designed to make him a fan favorite. but he could make a effort to be a little more well liked. he seems like a guy with a relatively crappy disposition.

-Bessies mother is an outsider that can see whats going on. to me this shows that not everyone that comes to gatehead is toally snowed. unlike the doctor and Mr. Brocklehurst were totally obliviouse to waht was going on. as for the hired help most of them think Jane deserved to be treated like crap. at least a couple people in Janes life can see her for who she is and not feel that she deserves to be treated as less than a human being.

-she should enjoy it. she just showed her opresser that she was no longer affriad of her or cared what she thought of her. most of her curage comes from the fact that she knows that she will be leaving soon. still it is amazing that a 10 year old had the courage to talk that way to an abusive adult. the language she uses is also very interesting to me. when i was 10 i knew how to talk back and prove someone wrong when they were but i couldnt do it like THAT!

-Jane finally told Reed exactly how she felt. she totally put her in her place and schooled her. i havent been that excited to finish reading a section in a while. Mrs. Reed finally had all that she had done to Jane laid before her and she didnt like what she saw and for good reason. Jane showed her exactly what she was and Reed seemed to get scared like she knew she was a bad person. thats why she reacts to Janes word the way she does, becuase she knows that they are true.

- i think she sees that doll as a miniature of herself more than anything else, and she hopes that lavishing affection on it will make her feel either more loved herself or give her a purpose. she finds peace and solice in the fact that she can give the care and attnetion she wishes for to something else. and it also makes her feel like she has a friend and something that needs her. If i were in her place i suppose i would find a good feeling in that as well. I mean shes pretty much neglected and dissallowed any freindship or feeling of family.

-its nice to see that Jane is finaly standind up to Mrs. Reed. Its od to think of the language that Jane is using and then to think about her age. she sounds like someone my age of older but she is in fact only 10. the language difference back then was amazing. and Jane had never attended school either. i think it speaks volumes about society today as compared to then.

"Mrs. Reed surveyed me at all times with a severe eye, but seldom addressed me: since my illness, she had drawn an even more marked line of seperation than ever between me and her own children appionting me a small closet to sleep by myself, condeming me to take my meals alone, and pass all my time in the nursery..." Page 29
-Mrs. Reed pretty much places her in solitary confienment until she can figure out what to do with her. I would honestly like to know what exactly Jane did to Mrs. Reed for her to hate her so much. I mean its her fault the Jane had that fit in the first place so why is she so mad about the after affects/effects? and i dont think that locking Jane away from the world is helping her any either. I mean Mrs. Reed is probably causing perminent mental harm and crippling Jane socially.

Bessie, when she heard the narrative, sighed and said "Poor Miss Jane is to be pittied too". "yes," responded Abbot; "if she were a nice, pretty child, one might compassionate her forlorness; but one really cannot care for such a little toad as that." Page 28
- The fact the Jane isn't the prettiest child shouldn't have anything to do with the kind of care and affection she gets. Abbot treats her as less than a human being. When in reality Jane only acts out because ofthe poor treatment she recieves and she tired of it. I would be too. Abbot thinks that because she isn't as pretty as georgina that she should be locked away from society and treated like that, shes crazy.

"Misses was, she dared say, glad enough to get rid of such a tiresome, ill-conditionedchild, who always looked as if she were watching everybody, and scheming plots underhand."Abbot, i think gave me credit for being an infantile Guy Fawkes. Page 28.
- Mrs. Reed being happy to be rid of Jane doesnt surprise me. the fact that she is willing to send her to school instead of to work does however. i wonder why Mrs. Reed is so irritated with Jane. i think it has more to do with Janes mother, Mrs. Reeds sister in-law, than anything else, cuz janes only 10 what could she possibly have done to Mrs. Reed other than live with her to have made her hate her so much. it just seems really immature of Mrs. Reed to hate a child for things that are out of her control. and the servants sure do alot of gossiping.

- Jane doesnt sound to excited to live there. and it isnt like the staff has made her feel welcomed and at home at Gateshead. instead they tend to make her feel like she doesnt belong and that she isnt worth anything and she isnt good enough to live with them. personally i think family is family and if they're living with you because they need you then you should treat them like a guest. - Jane kinda tries to tell Mr. Loyed that she is being abused but at the tender age of 10 doesnt do a very good job of it. Mr.Loyed just kind of dismisses her complaint and talks about how nice the house is. i think he knows that Jane's aunt abuses her i mean how often do you hear i got pushed down and locked in a room from a child. i think it is incredibally irrisponsible on his part. and wow Janes aunt has alot of people fooled cuz Mr.Loyed started off with how nice he thought Jane's aunt was just the best thing...

"I wonder if he read the notion on my face; for all at once, without speaking, he struck suddenly and strongly. I tottered, and on regaining my equilibrium retired back a step or two from his chair." ---- " Go and stand by the door out of the way of the mirror and the windows."---- "I instinctively started with a cry of alarm: not soon enough, however,; the volume was flung at me, and i fell, striking my head against the door and cutting it."----"Take her away to the red-room, and lock her in there." Page 11-12
-OMG! So John Reed just hit her and then threw a book across the room and made her hit her head on the door and cut it, and his sisters just stood there and let it happen. Then his mom came in and told the servants to lock her away in a room. i can't believe that he isn't getting in trouble for beating the crap out of Jane. Like his mom doesn't even care. He's going to grow up to be a wife beater.

" Boh! Madame Mope!" cried the voice of John Reed; then he paused: he found the room empty apparently. "Where the dickens is she?" he continued. "Lizzy!Georgy! (calling to his sisters) Jane is not here: tell mama she is run out into the rain-bad animal!" "It is well i drew the curtain" thought I. Page 11
-Who are these kids that are looking for her and why do they need her? Why do they call her Madame Mope and other names? Why does John tell his sisters to go tell their mother that she is run out into the rain? It's like they are trying to get her into trouble, and their mother clearly doesn't think to highly of Jane to begin with so why are they trying to make it worse? And why does she let them treat her like this, calling her names and getting her in trouble and stuff?

" What does Bessie say I have done?" I asked. "Jane, i don't like cavillers or questioners: besides, there is something truly forbidding in a child taking up her elders in that manner. Be seated somewhere; and until you can speak pleasantly, remain silent." Page 9
- I kinda want to know who the elder is to Jane. I know that if someone talked to me that way after I had asked a simple question I would be very upset. Why doesn't she allow Jane to talk or to participate in the "family time". And why is Jane there in the first place? If the lady dislikes Jane so much and she did something so horrible then why does she allow Jane to live ther? Where are her parents? And i want to know how exactly she talks to Jane, like is it supposed to sound? Because when I read the I take it as down, through the nose kind of an attitude and thats kinda rude and mean to be talking to a child that way.
